The Federal Government regulates the labeling of flavors. These
regulations can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations, Food Labeling
Requirements CFR 101.22. This subchapter defines artificial flavor (a)(1),
spice (a)(2), natural flavor (a)(3) and the correct use of these terms in foods
and beverages. The exact regulations are available on the web at
www.gpoaccess.gov/cfr/index.html.
Silver Cloud's labeling conforms to the federal regulations. Below are
examples of what these label designations mean to the consumer:
Pure Extracts:
Except for Vanilla, there is no federal regulation for the
definition " pure extract". As a result the meaning of pure extract
is somewhat open to interpretation. We believe, however, that a pure
extract should, like a "natural flavor", be derived exclusively from the named
product. As an example Silver Cloud's Pure Orange Extract contains
only pure orange oil. Unfortunately, some companies use the term "pure" to
describe extracts, which contain artificial flavors or natural and
artificial flavors. We believe this is misleading and it is one reason Silver
Cloud's pure extracts are sometimes more expensive. The solvents used in pure
extracts are not considered part of the flavor. All of Silver Cloud's pure
extracts are made exclusively with ethyl alcohol.
Imitation Extracts:
The term "imitation" extract was popularized by McCormick & Co. and other
manufacturers of retail bakery extracts to describe extracts which typically
contain artificial flavors (see definition of an artificial flavor
below). Imitation extracts are less expensive than pure
extracts and natural flavors. This is largely due to the fact that the
synthetic or artificial flavor ingredients used to make imitation extracts are
generally less expensive than their natural equivalents .
Artificial Flavor:
An artificial flavor is derived exclusively from artificial or synthetic flavor
ingredients. As an example and Artificial Orange Flavor would contain
only artificial flavor ingredients none of which are derived from orange.
Natural Flavor:
All flavor ingredients derived from the named product. As an
example an orange flavor labeled as a "Natural Orange Flavor"
must contain flavor ingredients derived exclusively from orange.
Solvents, diluents, emulsifiers and water are not considered part of the flavor
Natural Flavor Blend:
A natural flavor blend is a flavor which contains only natural flavor
ingredients. None of the flavor ingredients, however, need to be derived from
the named product. As an example, a flavor labeled Orange, Natural
Flavor Blend would contain only natural flavor ingredients,
though none of them would need to be derived from oranges.
Natural and Artificial Flavors:
A natural and artificial flavor contains at least one ingredient from the
named product. In the case of a Natural and Artificial Orange Flavor at least
one of the flavor ingredients would need to be derived from oranges
for it to carry this designation. There is no requirement regarding
the ratio of natural to artificial ingredients.
WONF:
A flavor labeled WONF (with other natural flavors) is all natural and contains
at least one ingredient derived from the named product. As an
example an Orange Flavor, WONF would be all natural and contain at
least one flavor ingredient from oranges.
These designation can be rather confusing. We want the consumers of our
products to understand what they are buying. If you have
